Hey everyone! Hope you are having a great Wednesday. Here are today’s movie news bites.
So, according to a Collider source, the character descriptions for the upcoming Power Rangers film have been decided. Just to let everyone know, they are going to be 17 year old teenagers.
Generally the descriptions are OK. So, Jason (the Red Ranger in Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers), is the leader. He’s kind of the jock. He was a quarterback and high school star. Then he hurt his knee and that’s no longer an option. He’s lost when we see him in the film. Now, I can imagine Jason being the quiet, strong, reluctant leader of the group who eventually steps up. That seems to be more realistic of guy like Jason. And right off the bat, these characters feel more real than the MMPR show (not hard to do).
I’ll put the rest of the character descriptions in quotes.
Kimberley (the original Pink Ranger)
“17 years old, unconventionally cool all in a way the popular girls wish they were. In fact, she was one of those girls, but isn’t anymore. Not since she’s returned to school after an absence of 6 months. Rumors are flying as to why; rumors she seems not to care about, because she’s come back with this new rebel-without-a-cause, edgy attitude. But the truth is, it’s all masking a deep secret that makes her feel profoundly vulnerable.”
So she is kind of a mirror image of Jason. Anyone else getting the mean girls vibe from this? Or maybe she’s a hipster who is too cool for being popular? Either way, it’s easy to see how she and Jason could be the romantic dynamic of the group.
Billy (the original Blue Ranger)
“17 years old, slight and awkward. Billy is challenged in his abilities to communicate and interact socially. Whip-smart and sweet, but always odd. Sometimes in a fun way, sometimes not, Billy is a kid with no filter. Showing his emotions, understanding sarcasm, and dealing with his OCD is a constant challenge. Has never really had any friends and instantly gravitates towards Jason.”
I like this and don’t like it. Aren’t we beyond the stereotypical nerd? It seems that being a nerd and geek is a positive thing? Also, I don’t want his OCD to be a big challenge or disability for him to “overcome.” I worked in the developmental disability field for 2 years and when we act like a disability is something to “overcome” instead of it just being something about that person, we begin to view them in a different manner instead of just people.
Trini (the original Yellow Ranger. Thanks for the not-so-obvious racism, MMPR!)
“17 years old, mysterious and extremely bright. Her parents constantly move for work, making Trini the perpetual new girl to any school. A loner who owns it, Trini is self-sufficient, contemplative, but always observant. All she wants is to find her gang of friends, but she’ll never admit it – least of all to herself.”
And finally Zach (the original Black Ranger)
“17 years old, always the life of the party. Filled with bravado and swagger, Zack’s tough and cool on the exterior. A charming guy who’s never had trouble with the one-liner, nor lacked confidence around women. A great athlete that’s never wanted to play on any team but his own. Zack advertises everything about himself, except the truth, which is that he lives in a trailer park with his single mom, and because of it, feels deeply inferior to all his peers.”
Overall, I feel like these character descriptions are a good backdrop and beginning to some diverse personalities within the group. They each have their faults and seem like they are deeper than just what they have. I hope that we get to see this in the interactions instead of just being told what it is. And there are characters that could definitely play off each other. But this is the early stages and it is way too early to start calling this movie great.
By the way, in the intro the MMPR, Zordon says he wants “teenagers with attitude.” Who, in all of history, has EVER wanted teenagers with attitude? I work with teenagers every day and I would never want to have a group of them with attitudes. Why would this wise Zordon want that? Besides, these teens don’t have attitudes as much as issues. That part has always bothered me.
OK, so I’ve recently started watching the Flash TV series and I really like it. I think it is a lot of fun and a really fantastic show. However, I was able to figure out who was the Reverse Flash within the first couple episodes I watched. Now, I’m seeing a poster for season two that again shows the Barry Allen Flash vs. the original Flash Jay Garrick. Now, the poster looks great. The whole thing is such an awesome throwback to the comics.
However, while this Flash will be an ally and not a villain, Professor Zoom will be. Look, one of the cool things about a superhero is that they are like us but with unique powers. Unfortunately, there have been 1,303,594 Flashes in the DC Universe so it doesn’t feel as unique. How many Wolverines have there been? One. How many Supermans have there been? One. There is a reason not to saturate so many different iterations of a certain character. While it’s cool to explore parallel dimensions (possibly opening up the DC TV universe with the movie universe) I feel like Flash might rely on too many speedsters in the show.
Holy crap does this look awesome! It looks like it will be a low-budget movie with plenty of great characters. Tarentino is going back to his roots from Reservoir Dogs and keeping the film in one specific setting. I like that there is mystery to it and I like that there is some sort of connection between the characters. This film takes place right after the Civil War and so there are Civil War veterans that we encounter. I especially like how Tarentino is taking on another western-style movie. The setting is great, the costumes are great and you know that the action, story and dialogue are going to be great. His directing and his style are so awesome. I cannot wait to watch this movie!
OK, I actually would like to see this film. I’m a huge fan of Allison Brie and Jason Sudeikis is also very talented. I really like the premise of this movie. People how have a hard time committing and not sleeping with other people end up being in a quasi-relationship with each other. It feels like a lot of fun. I mean, sure, it’ll probably hit the same tropes as any romantic comedy would but this could be a lot of fun. That scene where they show up to a kids birthday high; I know of a few people who would probably want to do that but don’t (that must be on the bucket list of a few people. In fact, this might be on the list of things we wish we could do but don’t do because, well, we like having friends). This trailer also shows how raunchy of a comedy this will be. Though past all of the sex jokes, there will probably be some good heart.
That’s it for today! Thanks, everyone! Enjoy your Wednesday!
